The Abubakar Gimba Prize for Short Fiction opened in 1st December, 2019. It was sponsored by Alhaji Abdulrahman JG, a politician and lover of Arts, it was administered by the Hill-Top Creative Arts Foundation (HCAF). It was a snappy, creative, smart and free of prescription competition with no themes attached. One winner gets a cash prize of #20,000 in the monthly contest. The winner of the maiden edition was Abdulbasit Yusuff with his story HOW TO CHASE THE WHIRLWIND. The competition ran till 2021. Plans are underway to resuscitate it in 2024.
In 2023, the Abubakar Gimba Prize for Creative Non-fiction was inaugurated by a new sponsor; Art-Muse-fair, an online literary journal in Nigeria founded by Mal. Aminu S. Muhammad is a Minna-based writer and photographer. The maiden edition of this annual prize received more than 78 entries.
The winner of the maiden edition of the Abubakar Gimba Prize for Creative Non-fiction, 2023, was Okorie Divine’s Chronicles of Fragile Things. He won the sum of N100,000 from the Art-Muse-Fair Magazine. The competition is for May/June of every year.The Wakaso Monthly Poetry Contest is open to all Poets in Nigeria, especially young ones. The maiden edition winner was Tolutope Ogedengbe with his poem titled LOST PARADISE, written on the theme “Owning Nigeria”. Other young poets won subsequent editions from across Nigeria.
Madam Aisha who is currently, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Niger State on Print Media has plans to bring back the competition in January 2024.
