HCAF Stars Series Throwback: Interview — Victoria Ilemobayo Ojo

Question:

The Hilltop Creative Arts Foundation is known for her central role of nurturing creativity in youths across the country. How has being its member contributed to your growth as an artist, and what opportunities, or experiences have been most impactful for you?

Answer:

HCAF has been instrumental to my artistic growth. I had fellows who looked out for me and inspired me to be the best. HCAF contests, mentorship, book reviews, game nights and others, are what I enjoyed most.

Question:

What themes and experiences push the creativity behind your work, and what part of the creative process poses a challenge to you? 

Answer:

My personal experience, and struggles. I explore themes like family, friendship, identity, home and more. 

As for my challenges, I battle with Imposter Syndrome. 

Question:

As a renowned creative, what advice would you give to emerging artists who are looking to balance the pursuit of artistic excellence with the desire for recognition and validation?

Answer:

The journey is far. Be yourself, take your time and have a supportive community.

Question:

What purpose fuels your creativity ? 

Answer:

My creativity is fueled by my desire to inspire, heal and encourage someone out there.

Question:

Fifty years away from now, what do you want the literary world to perceive of your art? 

Answer:

That’s a long time. Well, a reflection of human experiences and creativity.

Question:

Is representation a priority for you, and do you see a need for your writing to reflect your background, or ancestral links?

Answer:

Yes, it is for me. But it does not have to be everywhere in my work.
